Why You Need to Know Your Calgary Sacrificial Anode Rod

But here’s why we want to share our shop talk with you.  Taking care of your Calgary sacrificial anode rod can save you heaps of home maintenance dollars by extending the life of your hot water tank by double.  Really.

So what is this obscure little bit of metal you’ve never heard of and why does it hold such power to literally double the life of your hot water tank?  First, some science.

Water is naturally corrosive. Ever visited the Grand Canyon?  Yeah, that was carved out by water.  The movement of water, and the chemistry of water.  On a smaller scale, (hey, we’re making a point here … stay with the thought) the same dynamics are at play inside your hot water tank.  Water moves, and water chemically reacts with its ambient surroundings.  In the case of your hot water tank, the ambient surroundings are metal.  And if you’ve ever left your metal wheelbarrow or wagon sat with water pooled inside for any length of time, you’ve seen how quickly water corrodes metal into rust.

End of the science lesson.  Now some home economics.

Inside your hot water tank is a piece of metal – read:  sacrificial anode rod – whose job it is to attract all the corrosive qualities of the water moving through and storing inside this critical piece of your home plumbing system.  Essentially, the anode rod sacrifices itself in service to the tank itself.  But here’s the rub:  if you don’t replace the sacrificial anode rod when it’s completed its life cycle, this vital piece of engineering does what it was designed to do – dissolves – leaving the lining of your hot water tank once more vulnerable to the corrosive nature of water.

We recommend you check your Calgary hot water tank’s sacrificial anode rod every year, expecting to replace it about every two or three years.  In Alberta, our water is mountain fed, and the acidity and alkalinity changes through the year, which, along with other variable factors, affect how long your anode rod will last.  Replacing the sacrificial anode rod when it’s spent can literally double the life of your hot water tank.  That just makes great home economic sense.

And, we can’t help but mention that this bit of annual plumbing maintenance is yet one more service we provide, for free, to all Diamond Club [rollover link] members.  If you have questions about the Diamond Club, or want to schedule a service call to replace your sacrificial anode rod, give us a call.  We simply like collaborating with you to help you make the most of your home maintenance dollars.
