Change Your Furnace Filter in Calgary

November 22, 2011 at 3:15 pm | Category: Heating

Remember last winter?  The long months your home was closed up tight against the blinding cold outside?  Remember the colds, the flues, the sneezing and coughing family and friends?  All those germs, those stale air molecules, not to mention the bacteria those germs and molecules bred while you were frolicking your summer away, are trapped in your Calgary furnace filter just waiting to be spewed back into your indoor air with the first bellow of the furnace.

But beyond that, there’s another reason why it’s worth the few dollars a year a new filter costs.  A blocked filter reduces air flow, and too much air flow reduction can cause back pressure in your furnace which can seriously damage the components on the inside.  It might be hard to imagine that a thin bit of cardboard and filter material can be held responsible for such a potentially expensive repair bill, but, well, that’s why we’re here, educating you on all these insider’s secrets.

The furnace filter is easy to find.  It’s usually near the floor of the furnace, tucked into the side, and it looks like a cardboard sleeve.  On the edge of the filter, the type and size of filter that fits your furnace is printed.  Jot that down and any home improvement store will have fresh, clean replacements … just in time for the first furnace burn of the season.

Oh, and that kinda burnt smell you smell when the Calgary  furnace does fire up for the first time?  You don’t need to call us.  It’s nothing to be alarmed about.  It’s normal for the first use of the season, it’s just dust that has settled on the heating elements, and will burn off in a couple of hours.
