Turn Off the Water in Your Calgary Home
Here’s what can happen if you don’t: water left in the Calgary plumbing lines leading outside can freeze. Frozen water expands in volume and that can stress pipe joints causing leaks, or, worse, split water lines to bursting. Which can cause flooding inside your house. Which can damage mechanical systems like your furnace and your hot water tanks and even your electrical systems, often hubbed in the same place. Not to mention drywall, flooring and boxes of photographs you’ve got stored downstairs. It just can get really, really messy … and really, really expensive.
Now imagine any of this happening while you’re sleeping, or away for the weekend, or snowbirding down south. Real messy. Real expensive.
If you’ve never done something quite so home-maintenance-DIY, and aren’t sure how to turn off your outdoor water faucet water supply, here’s a step-by-step How To:
Inside, downstairs, find where the Calgary water pipes lead to the outside faucets. Follow the lines inward, and toward the hub of your home mechanical systems, you’ll find a shut off valve, (which often – though not always – has a red handle). Turn it to the right, (remember, righty tighty, lefty loosey) until it is snugly turned all the way off. Then, return outside and turn the outdoor faucet to the left, allowing all the remaining water in the line to run out. Leave the outside faucet open throughout the winter. Remember, you’ve already shut off the main water line valve, and now, no water will be in, or run through that line until you reopen the main valve again in the spring.
Of course, all of the above might be tricky to do if your lower level is completely developed, with all of your home’s mechanical systems hidden behind finished drywall … in which case your search might have to be more intuitive.
But there is still help to be had. (This maintenance task is so important, it’s absolutely worth taking the extra necessary steps to make sure you can complete it before the outside temperature freezes.)
We can come in and do it for you. We’ll turn off the water supply to your outside hose lines, and we’ll mark and show you where your shutoff valves are, so next year, you can do it yourself, with confidence. One service call, a bit of education and help, and your peace of mind that you’re not tempting fate with one of the most costly
