The culprit behind these issues is hard water.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our municipal water goes through an extensive process of filtration before it reaches our taps, but that doesn\u2019t mean that it\u2019s infallible. If you\u2019d like to get rid of the negative effects of hard water in your home once and for all, we\u2019ve listed a few great options below. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2>What is Hard Water?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you first hear the term \u201chard water\u201d it\u2019s a little odd.\nWater probably isn\u2019t something you\u2019d ever describe as \u201chard\u201d on your own accord,\nbut this term is typically a pretty familiar phenomenon in most homes. Hard\nwater is what causes that ugly white build up you see on your dishes and around\nyour showerhead, it\u2019s what makes your hair feel stiff after a shower, and it\u2019s\nwhy your laundry comes out dull and stiff. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To state it simply, hard water is water that has a high\namount of mineral content. The standard minerals that you\u2019ll find in hard water\nare calcium and magnesium and unfortunately for us, hard water is pretty common\nhere in Calgary due to the high amount of calcium and magnesium in the water coming\nfrom the Bow and Elbow Rivers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>How it Affects Your Home and Body<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news is that hard water isn\u2019t a detriment to your\nhealth, but the bad news is that hard water is a detriment to just about\neverything else. Hard water affects your home and body in the following ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Your Home<\/strong>:\nHard water clogs your pipes. If you\u2019ve had hard water in your home for years there\u2019s\nno doubt that your pipes have accumulated layers of these mineral deposits. As\nthe layers of mineral deposit get thicker and thicker it makes the width of\nyour pipe much narrower\u2014decreasing your water pressure and making your water \u201charder.\u201d<\/li><li><strong>Your Body<\/strong>:\nHard water makes your hair brittle, your skin dry, and clothes dull. Minerals\nin hard water reduce the ability of your shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and\nlaundry detergent to dilute. Since these things can\u2019t wash off well it really\nstarts to irritate your skin. The same thing happens when you wash a load of\nlaundry. If you have hard water, you might notice that your clothes are stiff\nor dull after a laundry cycle. &nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2>What You Can Do About It<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re tired of dealing with hard water in your home then\nthe best thing you can do is install a water softener or conditioner. A\nwhole-house water softening system uses a process of ion exchange to counteract\nhard water. It swaps out the hard water ions out for brine ions and softens to water\nin the process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want a salt-free way to soften your home\u2019s water then\na water conditioner might be for you. It doesn\u2019t actually make the water \u201csoft\u201d\nbecause it doesn\u2019t remove the minerals, but it does reduce their ability to\ncreate limescale. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hard water is a real nuisance in most homes, but you can fix this problem with our team by your side.
