Signs that you have a problem<\/strong>: The trouble with wasting water this way is that it\u2019s not always obvious that it\u2019s happening. There often aren\u2019t any signs that water flowing from the tank into the bowl is being wasted. The only sign is usually \u201cphantom flushing.\u201d This is when the toilet flushes on its own. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to test for issues<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Remove your toilet tank lid and place it on the floor. (Pro Tip: This is important because if the lid breaks, it\u2019s almost impossible to find a replacement. This means you\u2019ll have to invest in a new toilet. Save yourself the trouble and make sure that your toilet lid doesn\u2019t drop off the counter or the bathtub ledge.)<\/li>
  2. Place 10 drops of food colouring into the toilet tank. Wait 15 minutes before flushing.<\/li>
