7-Step Guide to Plumbing Water Leak Detection

Hard to locate water leaks inside a home are a challenge because of water wasted. They also create destruction over time and in the end cost the homeowner a tremendous amout of money in repairs. This guide will provide a step-by-step process on how to find water leaks.

Conduct a Visual Plumbing Water Leak Inspection

Look around your home. Check anything connected to a water line. Search for wet patches, water puddles, or signs of drips. Also, look for water stains, or bubbled paint on walls. These are significant signs, because they confirm a water leak somewhere in the plumbing system.

Step 2: Read the Water Meter to Test for a Water Leak

Reading the water meter reveals hidden leaks within the plumbing system. First, do a visual check for water leaks inside and outside the house. Then read the water meter. Do not use any water for a few hours. Then read the water meter again. If the readings of the water pressure are not the same as before, then you have a water leak.

Step 3: Test the Water Pressure

Correct water pressure is also a very important part of your home’s plumbing system. When the water pressure is too high, the pressure will strain pipes, fixtures, and cause leaks. Use a pressure gauge to see if the water pressure stays within a specified margin of 40-70 pounds per square inch (psi). Making adjustments to the water pressure will reduce the stress on pipes, prevent leaks and extend the life of your plumbing system.

Step 4: Use Food Coloring in the Toilet Tank

A simple method to detect water leaks in toilets involves food colouring. Add several drops of food colouring to the toilet tank and wait without flushing the toilet for 30 minutes. If the colored water shows up in the bowl, this means that you have a defective flush valve seal. This is brought about by a defective flapper valve.

Step 5: Check Walls, Ceilings, and Floors for a Water Leak

A plumbing water leak will not be noticed until the damage has been done. As in step 2 signs of a hidden leak include floor discoloration, bubbling paint on walls and ceilings, wet carpets.

Step 6: Inspect the Outside Plumbing

Check for water leaks on the outside of the home. Hose bibs, outside taps, and sprinkler systems will spring a leak if a seal or washer wears out. But if left unchecked outsid water leaks will have a direct effect on the foundation the landscape around the home.

Step 7: Hire a Plumber

If a water leak is found that cannot be located or if your skill set to repair the water leak is beyond your abilities , call Ace Plumbing. Because the technicians at Ace Plumbing come equipped with up to date tools and technologies needed to find and repair plumbing leaks. They are able keep your plumbing system in top condition.
